1980
New 2-10 MV low energy linear accelerators were commonly utilized for radiation treatment of cancer. Atomic pioneered the technology to shield these as well. With the emergence of cobalt radiation equipment the focus of our work changed from the utilization of isotopes to the shielding required for the environments utilizing this equipment.
1981
As energy levels increased the proportional thickness of concrete shields became a factor compromising the valuable space in hospitals and clinics as well as escalating the cost of construction. To minimize this problem Atomic developed the Shieldray® Technology interlocking lead brick that reduced space requirements by 70% and could be built at a cost comparable to that of the concrete bunkers.
1985
Medical accelerator technology topped the 10 MV threshold. Lead, already expensive, lost its space-saving advantage, as it required additional layers or borated polyethylene in order to attenuate neutrons. The only other choice for the high energy accelerator was the burgeoning concrete bunker. Atomic International sought to find an alternative to the two extremes – technology that could effectively shield in significantly less space than concrete and at a cost lower than lead/poly systems.
1993
Atomic International introduced Ledite®. This interlocking block system shielded against both neutron and gamma/X-radiation, while achieving significant cost and space saving advantages over concrete, high density concrete, lead or any other material.
2003
With increasing interest and development in proton beam radiation therapy systems, Atomic has introduced Ledite ProShield technology which advances the science of facility design and construction. ProShield now provides the means to implement particle technology in the mainstream medical technology.
Today Ledite® accelerator rooms can be found from Bangor, Maine to Bangkok, Thailand. Atomic International continues to lead the world in accelerator room Shieldray® technology, offering a range of products, services, expertise and support that is unrivaled in the industry.
