FAQ's

Q: Is there lead in Ledite®?
A: Ledite contains no lead.

Q: How heavy is one Ledite block?
A: 70 - 75 lbs.

Q: What are the dimensions of the block?
A: 6" (15.24 cm) x 6" (15.24 cm) x 12" (30.48 cm)

Q: What is the density of Ledite block?
A: High density block is generally 300PCF (4.8 g/cm3) on the primary walls and 240 PCF on secondary walls.

Q: How much will it cost for one block?
A: Ledite is not sold per block it is sold per room. In most cases, this price includes installation.

Q: How much will it cost to build a room?
A: A price for a Ledite accelerator room is based on information provided on completed project questionnaire as well as room layouts etc. However, a typical single room typically requires approximately 20-25 truckloads of material. Each truck carries between 10-12 pallets of block. Block is stacked 60 units to the pallet.

Q: How long will it take to construct a Ledite accelerator room?
A: One third the installation time compared to concrete.

Q: What is the cost of Ledite compared to concrete?
A: Comparable or even less than concrete.

Q: What material does Atomic supply for the construction of a room?
A: Material supplied by Atomic will include: structural steel beams, Ledite block shielding, high density grout, steel bearing plates and shielding door with frame.

Q: What type of shielding doors does Atomic supply?
A: Atomic provides both swinging door and sliding doors.

Q: How far apart are the steel beams placed?
A: Steel beams are generally spaced at 1' (30.5 cm) center spacing. Beams are typically W8 beams, however the weight of the beam (strength) is determined based on the ceiling load conditions and span.

Q: Does Atomic have a full time supervisor at the jobsite?
A: Atomic will provide a project supervisor at the start of the installation and will schedule site visits periodically until the completion of the project.

Q: How soon can block installation begin?
A: Block installation can begin as soon as floor slab and footings are in place.

Q: How is Ledite block delivered?
A:

  1. International shipments: Products are typically shipped in closed 20' or 40' shipping containers. Any special shipping/handling requests must be sent in writing to Atomic at least four weeks before shipment. A rate quotation for special shipping conditions will be quoted at time of notice.

  2. Domestic shipments: Block is typically shipped in "closed van" type tractor-trailers. Special provisions can possibly be made to ship products on "flatbed" trailers instead of closed vans. Additional cost for flatbed trailers will be quoted separately based on mileage and availability of flatbeds. If flatbeds are required, owner/general contractor must notify Atomic in writing at least two weeks before shipping.

Q: On international shipments, who arranges for off-loading of materials to jobsite and who pays for land transit of materials from port to jobsite?
A: This is usually the responsibility of the owner. You may wish to work with a freight forwarder who will assist with transportation of the materials to the jobsite and customs clearance.

Q: For international projects, does your quote include taxes or import duties?
A: No, our quote does not include import duties or taxes that may be applicable to your project. You may wish to contact a freight forwarder to help with this.

Q: How is block unloaded from truck?
A: A forklift will be required for side offloading of flatbed tractor trailers. If a loading dock is available, pallet jacks and other handling equipment may be used to rear offload closed box van tractor trailers.

Q: When are deliveries scheduled at project site?
A: Deliveries will be made during normal work hours of 7:00 am through 5:00 PM unless special conditions mandate other delivery times. Additional cost for deliveries during off hours will be quoted separately.

Q: Who pays for temporary utilities?
A:Temporary lighting, heat, water, electrical service for mixers, welders, etc. must be supplied by owner/general contractor.

Q: What type of access to site is required?
A: Reasonable access to site must be provided. This means palletized Ledite block material weighting nearly 4,000 lbs. each with skid dimensions of 48" x 48" x 30" may be transported through corridors, doorways, elevators, etc. using conventional material handling (carts, electric pallet lift, forklift, etc.) equipment as necessary.

Q: What do you use around the pipes and other openings?
A: Special grout.

Q: How do you install Ledite blocks?
A: Ledite blocks are dry stacked utilizing its interlocking feature.

Q: Do you use mortar?
A: Block can be laid dry stacked up to four courses. At every fourth course of block (every 60m high) a mortar joint will be required between horizontal joint in order to keep wall level.

Q: Is special storage required for the grout?
A: No special storage requirements are necessary for the grout. Materials must be in close proximity to the area and temporary heating must be provided if weather is at freezing temperatures due to mortar requirements, etc.

Q: Is a 220v electrical requirement needed?
A: A 220 volt electrical requirement is only necessary if an electric welder or mixers are provided instead of gas powered units.

Q: Is scaffolding required?
A: Yes, scaffolding is required for wall construction.

Q: Is Atomic International a distributor or manufacturer?
A: Both.

Q: Does your product come with a warranty?
A: Yes, materials are warranted against defects in workmanship and material for a period of one year from completion and acceptance of testing.

Q: How do I place an order?
A: There are several ways to order materials and engage services from Atomic:

  1. Letter of Intent with "Authorization to Proceed" - a letter of intent is acceptable for ordering work to begin however a letter of intent must be following with an executed contract agreement acceptable to Atomic.

  2. Signature line on Atomic proposal - This is the simplest method of engagement and the fastest way of contracting. The proposal will become a binding contract between parties only when signature and/or corporate seal of each party appear on the last page of the proposal.

  3. Purchase Order - A standard customer purchase order may be issued to Atomic authorizing material production and other services such as supervision and/or installation services. The purchase order is generally issued when Atomic is not providing installation services but is providing material, supervision and/or design services. The purchase order must include:
  1. Detailed "scope of work" description or reference to Atomic proposal letter.
  2. Contract price noted on purchase order in accordance to Atomic's proposal.
  3. The date (day, month and year)
  4. Signature of authorized owner representative (buyer)
  1. AIA (American Institute of Architects) standard contract - AIA contracts are generally used when Atomic is to provide materials with installation/construction services or design and build, design and management (supervisory services) or combination of these. Contract must include:
  1. Detailed scope of work description or reference to an Atomic proposal letter
  2. A contract price noted on the purchase order in accordance to Atomic's proposal letter.
  3. The date (day, month & year)
  4. Signature of authorized owner representative (buyer)

Q: How do I place an order for an international project?
A: To engage the services of Atomic International and to ensure timely production and shipment of materials to a project an acceptable and properly drafted Letter of Credit or other form of acceptable security must be completed by the customer and submitted to Atomic for their acceptance. The material purchase requires a Documentary Letter of Credit while the installation services require a Standby Letter of Credit.

Q: Does Atomic International have a buy-back policy?
A: Atomic does not have a set buy back policy. Many customers intend to re-locate their room in the future. This is probably the most common "future use" rather than reselling the materials. Atomic may be open to some trade-in type arrangement.

Q: Who provides the testing of the complete room?
A: The final facility needs to be tested by the "owner'' in house physicist. Atomic will provide assistance with the testing i.e. we can provide a neutron survey meter and will be on site if needed during the testing. All testing is to be done in concert with owners appointed Radiation Safety Officer. Atomic can provide assistance with the testing protocol formalities and final report but the report does need to be issued to the owner's physicist.
